Wake Up and Smell It Buffalo, Community Control of Resources!

On Tuesday, July 29th, the Common Council’s Community Development Committee hosted a public hearing for residents could express their thoughts on how best to spend what may very well be the last round of Restore New York funds from the state - a pot that could total $50 million for Buffalo. (Check out the Buffalo News article on the hearing as well as the Artvoice article)

 

 

The house was packed and the demands from the public at the hearing were nearly unanimous: that people want community control of resources and a more thoughtful, strategic, and committed way of dealing with Buffalo's abandoned housing crisis. Hopefully this will serve as the wake-up call the administration needs and we'll soon see strategic rehabilitation & demolition, local hiring, and weatherization assistance in our neighborhoods soon. In other words, real economic development.

 

 

PUSH would like to acknowledge some of our major partners in the housing struggle, LISC, the foundation community, and other city-wide groups who have worked with us, but most importantly, we want to acknowledge the people who live in the neighborhoods of Buffalo because without them, none of this would be happening.

 

 

A year's worth of work is beginning to pay off as people realize they have a seat at the table. Keep it up folks, it's working!
