Rally to Protect Day Care Subsidies
Tuesday, February 9th
Meet at St. Joseph's Cathedral at 4:30PM
March to the County Building at 5:00 PM
County Executive Collins abruptly terminated subsidies that allow working families to obtain daycare for their children. Prior to termination, families with incomes up to 200% of the poverty line received subsidies to help with daycare expense. Now only those with incomes up to 125% are eligible and 1,500 children are in jeopardy!
What will happen if the families of these children lose this help?
Some parents will quit working and go on public assistance.
Some parents will quit going to school and lose their opportunity to advance.
Some children will receive sub-standard care.
What will happen to child care providers?
Some childcare small businesses will go out of business.
Some daycare employees will lose their jobs.
This cruel decision is shortsighted and makes no economic sense! The Comptroller's office and the Erie County Legislature were not consulted in this decision that affects all districts in Erie County. Further, federal stimulus dollars can be applied for to increase Erie County's resources for this program. But County Executive Collins has refused to act. The County Legislature has voted unanimously to provide a 90-day extension before any cuts take effect. But County Executive Collins refuses to act.
Let's Tell Him What We Think!!!
