Cooperation Buffalo is very excited to announce a virtual lecture by Jessica Gordon-Nembhard, Ph.D., Professor of Community Justice and Social Economic Development, in the Department of Africana Studies, John Jay College CUNY.
Dr. Gordon-Nembhard is the author of Collective Courage: A History of African American Cooperative Economic Thought and Practice and 2016 inductee into the U.S. Cooperative Hall of Fame. She is also a member of many cooperative development organizations and is on the board of several organizations that promote social and economic justice around the country.
In Buffalo, COVID-19 has not only upended our local economy – it has worsened our city’s racial wealth disparity and accelerated gentrification. Dr. Gordon-Nembhard will be speaking about how cooperatives can be used to build wealth for marginalized communities, push back against gentrification, and create a vibrant small business community, owned by the people, that honors our city’s historic, diverse cultural traditions.
