INTENTIONS

• The Dunbar Project intends to provide young theatre artists with…
• a laboratory in which to create and perform theatre that reflects, investigates, and perpetuates community cultural development;
• the opportunity to develop performance, technical, and administrative skills pertinent to theatre;
• training in culturally specific performance styles and traditions.

Interdisciplinary training in acting, music, dance, and technical theatre are provided by professional artists with significant performance and teaching experience. Previously, from 2003 to 2010, The Dunbar Project focused on African American performance traditions. The 2020 program has expanded to incorporate the diverse cultures of Buffalo’s communities of color. The Dunbar Project trains youth in the performing arts traditions of their ancestors and aligns with Ujima Company’s vision for a just community based in collective work and responsibility.

PARTICIPATION
Participants are required to demonstrate their acquired skills and knowledge through public performance and/or apprenticeship in the Technical Theatre.

• The program currently accommodates 25 participants.
• Participants are chosen by the Artistic Director and Teaching Artists
• Absences and tardies must be “negotiated” in order to continue participation.

SCHOLARSHIPS
Scholarships will be provided for all successful applicants. Parents and family will be asked to become a part of our community and aid in our success by volunteering with the project.

AUDITIONS
We are looking for 25 committed young theatre artists to join us in 2020. Because experience is not required, an audition and interview to determine potential and level of interest is required.
